In 2021 Sajecki Planning Inc. was retained by the Town of Innisfil, in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary consultant team, to prepare a Secondary Plan and Master Servicing Plan for the lands surrounding the planned Innisfil GO Station. The Plan builds upon previous work undertaken by the Town to establish a vision for the Secondary Plan area, referred to as “The Orbit”.
The Plan establishes the policy framework necessary to support the evolution of The Orbit into a complete, sustainable, and transit-supportive community. Capitalizing on its strategic location and planned transit infrastructure, the Plan serves as an opportunity to rethink how growth can be accommodated to minimize adverse impacts on surrounding agricultural uses and natural heritage features.
The Plan is premised on a set of sustainability-focused principles pertaining to transportation and movement, energy, buildings, flexibility and adaptability, environment and green space, and social and cultural identity. It is also built upon the concept of 15-minute neighbourhoods which are compact, well-connected, and transit-supportive. Such neighbourhoods are anticipated to incorporate a diverse mix of uses including residential, commercial, community, employment, parks, and open spaces.
The planned Innisfil GO Station, and the surrounding transit hub, will serve as the heart of the community. Green spines will extend outward from the core. These serve as a central component of the mobility and land use strategy, serving as the foundation of the active transportation and open space network while framing these important civic spaces in active uses.
