In 2020 Sajecki Planning Inc. was retained as a sub-consultant to Perkins & Will, in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary consultant team, to assist the Toronto Public Library with securing municipal approvals for the Dawes Road Library Branch Redevelopment. The development requires a Minor Variance and Site Plan Approval.
The project strives to re-imagine the role of a library as a community and technology hub that allows for additional space for City of Toronto services and community programming. The hub will serve as a destination for learning, collaboration and support. It features spaces designed for digital content creation, indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, age-focused rooms/zones, artisanal production, craft production, and food preparation, among others.
The project has been designed with input from 12 distinct Indigenous stakeholder groups. The building design resembles a Star Blanket: a gift that is given to those who have worked to benefit their community.
The new building has been designed to achieve net-zero operational carbon, and to serve as a demonstration of how the Toronto Public Library is helping to achieve the City of Toronto’s ambitious climate change mitigation goals.
