Yonge Subway Extension: Royal Orchard Station

In an effort to maximize redevelopment potential of lands along the Yonge Street corridor, Markham council is requesting the Yonge Street subway executive committee to consider an additional subway stop at Royal Orchard Boulevard.

Markham’s development services committee voted to include the Royal Orchard station at its April 1 meeting after the findings of a consultants’ report determined the additional stop could be justified based on projected density targets. The Royal Orchard stop would be one of the seven stops on the proposed Yonge-University subway extension that would run from Finch Avenue to Richmond Hill Centre terminal. The provincial government reconfirmed its commitment to extending the subway to Richmond Hill in its recently unveiled $28.5-billion transit plan.

The City of Markham retained Sajecki Planning and Strategy Corp to analyze the existing municipal and regional policy frameworks and determine if future redevelopment of the station catchment area would generate sufficient ridership to justify the extra station.
